Top 10 Dogs during my journey – not just an ordinary man’s best friend.

“Dogs, lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you're going to lose a dog, and there's going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can't support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There's such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price. Maybe loving dogs is a way we do penance for all the other illusions we allow ourselves and the mistakes we make because of those illusions.” ― Dean Koontz, The Darkest Evening of the Year

A Heartfelt Story of Loyalty

Let me share with you a touching conversation:

Man: I will spend part of my life with you.

Dog: Why?

Man: Because I have to work for a living on weekdays, and on weekends, I go on getaways to rest.

Dog: I understand, Sir. I will wait for you. Even though you only spend part of your life with me, I promise I will spend my whole life with you.

This simple yet profound exchange moved me to tears. Inspired by this story of loyalty, I decided to share my experiences with the incredible dogs I’ve met throughout my journey. Here are my Top 10 Dogs—each one leaving a lasting impact on my life.

    Yurie – My First Dog

Yurie, a mini dachshund, was my very first pet. At the time, I knew little about raising a puppy. I let him walk outside my apartment without completing his vaccinations, thinking he was healthy enough. One day, I saw him vomiting, looking weak, and losing his appetite. Panicked, I rushed him to the vet—but it was too late.

Losing Yurie devastated me. I blamed myself for my negligence. Grieving, I impulsively bought another dog—Rocco, a Pomeranian.

     Rocco – My Travel Companion

Rocco became my best friend and constant companion. We traveled together, watching fireworks at MOA and exploring different places. But as my adventures became longer, I found myself leaving him alone in the apartment for days. It felt unfair. Realizing I could no longer give him the life he deserved, I made the heartbreaking decision to rehome him to a trusted friend. I sold my best friend, but only because I wanted him to be truly happy.

The Aspin Guide Dog in Marinduque

During a trek to Luzon Datum in Marinduque on July 7, 2014, my team stopped at a nipa hut near the jump-off point. We asked the owner how far the trek was.

"Wag kayo mag-alala, ipapasama ko sa inyo ang aso ko," he said.

True to his word, his Aspin (Asong Pinoy) became our instant tour guide, leading us safely through the trail. It was an unforgettable experience.

    Janus – The Intelligent Labrador

I met Janus, a brilliant Labrador, during my trip to Real, Quezon. He belonged to Duane, a fellow traveler I had explored Zambales with. Janus amazed me with his intelligence—he could swim into the sea just to retrieve a ball. I spent the entire trip playing with this smart, energetic dog.

    The Friendly Aspin of Palawan

While visiting Baker’s Hill in Palawan, I noticed an Aspin staring at me. The moment I approached, he started wagging his tail and playing with me. I wondered, Is this how dogs welcome their guests? His warmth and friendliness made my trip even more special.

The Playful Pug Duo at Luneta Park

Pugs are known for their adorable, wrinkly faces and curly tails. During a visit to Luneta Park, I met a pair of lively pugs. Their compact bodies and playful nature made them irresistible. I couldn’t help but stop and interact with them.

The Majestic Chow Chow in Puerto Galera

Chow Chows, originally from China, are often called "puffy-lion dogs." While staying at a resort in Puerto Galera, I encountered a regal-looking Chow Chow owned by the resort owner. This fluffy companion exuded elegance and calmness, perfectly fitting the serene vibe of the island.

The Giant Dog of Sabang Beach, Baler

During my trip to Sabang Beach in Baler, I came across a massive dog. At first, I was hesitant to approach him—he was as big as the waves crashing onto the shore! But as I got closer, I realized he was gentle and friendly. Sometimes, size can be intimidating, but this encounter taught me that even the biggest dogs can have the kindest hearts.

The Golden Retriever at SM Mall of Asia

Golden Retrievers were originally bred as hunting dogs to retrieve game birds. But in the heart of the city, at SM Mall of Asia, I met one enjoying an urban lifestyle. Despite his city surroundings, his friendly and energetic nature reminded me why Golden Retrievers are one of the most beloved breeds worldwide.

The Hungry Dogs of Pristine Beach, Puerto Princesa

At Pristine Beach in Puerto Princesa, countless stray dogs roamed the area. Many were scavengers, eager to grab food from unsuspecting beachgoers. But among them, I noticed one Aspin sleeping peacefully under a cottage—unlike the others, he seemed content just resting.

This moment made me reflect on the different struggles stray dogs face. Some fight for food, while others quietly wait for kindness.

The Companions Who Make Life Whole

Dogs may not be our whole life, but they certainly make our lives whole. Their loyalty, intelligence, and unconditional love prove that they are far more than just pets—they are family.
