I recently had the chance to visit one of the most breathtaking and underrated landmarks in Northern Luzon — Cape Bolinao Lighthouse in Patar, Pangasinan! 🏝️ If you're looking for a mix of history, nature, and scenic views, this place should definitely be on your Philippine travel bucket list.

Standing proudly at 351 feet above sea level, this historic structure is one of the tallest lighthouses in the Philippines, second only to Cape Bojeador in Ilocos Norte. Built in 1905 by a team of American, British, and Filipino engineers, the lighthouse was designed to help guide vessels navigating the West Philippine Sea. Can you imagine how many lives this beacon has protected over the decades?

Climbing its 134 steps was no joke — but the panoramic coastal view from the top made every step worth it. As I reached the upper viewing area, I was greeted with sweeping vistas of Patar Beach, the turquoise sea, and rolling hills that seem to stretch endlessly into the horizon. It was the kind of view that makes you pause and appreciate the raw beauty of the Philippines. 🇵🇭

Did you know that the original lighthouse equipment was sourced internationally? The lantern came all the way from France, while the third-order lighting apparatus was made in England. For decades, the lighthouse ran on kerosene until it was finally connected to the power grid by the Pangasinan Electric Cooperative in the 1980s.

Today, the Philippine Coast Guard maintains and protects the lighthouse under the Adopt-a-Lighthouse Program, ensuring that this piece of maritime history remains intact for future generations.

What’s more interesting? Nearby archaeological discoveries dating back to the 14th to 15th centuries give us a glimpse of pre-colonial life in this region. It’s like standing at the crossroads of the past and present.

Discovering the Hidden Gem: Bolinao Waterfalls Adventure in Pangasinan Province.

 

There’s nothing like a spontaneous adventure with your officemates, especially when it leads to a hidden paradise like Bolinao Waterfalls in Pangasinan! Our recent trip to this breathtaking destination was full of excitement, laughter, and nature’s wonders. With crystal-clear water cascading down rocky landscapes surrounded by lush greenery, Bolinao Waterfalls is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Trust me, if you’re a nature lover or an adventure seeker, this place is a must-visit!

The Journey to Bolinao Waterfalls

Getting to Bolinao was an adventure in itself! We took a road trip from Manila, heading north through scenic routes that offered beautiful views of the countryside. From the heart of Pangasinan, it took us roughly four hours to reach Bolinao. If you’re planning to visit, I highly recommend hiring a private van for comfort or taking a bus from Cubao if you’re on a budget. Be sure to leave early to make the most of your day at the waterfalls. Upon arriving at the jump-off point, we were greeted by friendly locals who guided us on a short trek through verdant trails that led straight to the waterfalls.

What to Do at Bolinao Waterfalls

Bolinao Waterfalls is made up of three levels, and each offers a unique experience. My officemates and I started with a refreshing swim at the first waterfall, which has a natural pool perfect for cooling off. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are also spots where you can jump from the rocks into the deep blue waters below. Don’t forget to bring a waterproof camera to capture the epic moments! We then trekked to the second and third waterfalls, which were less crowded and offered more tranquil spots for relaxing. The sound of water rushing down the rocks was incredibly soothing – the perfect backdrop for a picnic.

To make your Bolinao Waterfalls adventure smooth, here are some tips based on our experience:

• Wear sturdy footwear – The trek to the falls can be slippery, so hiking sandals or water shoes are a must.
• Bring snacks and water – There aren’t many stores around, so pack your own food for a picnic.
• Pack light but smart – Sunscreen, insect repellent, and waterproof bags are essential to protect your belongings.
• Arrive early – The earlier you arrive, the fewer crowds you’ll encounter, allowing you to enjoy the waterfalls in peace.
• Respect nature – Keep the place clean and bring your trash back with you.

My Review of Bolinao Waterfalls

Overall, Bolinao Waterfalls exceeded my expectations. The natural beauty of the place, combined with the thrill of exploring its multiple levels, made it a memorable trip. What I loved most about it is how untouched it still feels – the waterfalls aren’t overly commercialized, so you get a raw, authentic nature experience. It’s the perfect spot to unwind with friends, family, or, in my case, with awesome officemates. Whether you want to swim, take Instagram-worthy shots, or just relax in the middle of nature, Bolinao Waterfalls offers it all.

A Day of Fun and Adventure at Patar Beach, Bolinao, Pangasinan

 Our second day in Bolinao, Pangasinan, was nothing short of amazing, thanks to an unexpected twist! On May 7, 2017, at the crack of dawn, I met an enthusiastic new friend who eagerly took over my vlog. As we strolled along the pristine stretch of Patar Beach, she brought her unique flair to the narration, transforming our casual saunter into an engaging and entertaining adventure. The soft morning light reflected off the turquoise waters, and her excitement was contagious as she shared her thoughts and experiences with our viewers.

The highlight of our day was undoubtedly the impromptu rock climbing session. My friend, undeterred by the rugged terrain, scaled the impressive rock formations that dotted the beach. Her adventurous spirit shone through as she posed for an impromptu photoshoot, capturing stunning views of the beach and ocean from the heights. This unexpected takeover not only added a fresh perspective to the vlog but also showcased the beauty and excitement of Patar Beach. Upclose and Personal with #BiyaheNiJuan Backpackers Club in Bolinao, Pangasinan .

It is very beneficial to travel with friends, office-mates or even with a group of random backpackers. This is due to the fact – the more participants, the cheaper expenses will be. This is the main goal of Biyahe Ni Juan, a backpacker club that highlights of travelling in a shoestring budget. In addition, it is also advisable to travel once in a while and escape the stress from your work and the lifestyle in the urban zone.

BiyaheNiJuan is a recreational-centric group joined by numerous BPO workers with same goals. Their goal is to take a trip the cheapest way possible and to allocate a spare time for each member to travel – as much as possible when schedule permits.

“It is important that you have to spend time for yourself, and by traveling – it can help you recharge and become more positive when you go back to your work” Rambo said, one of the proponents of BiyaheNiJuan.

“In BiyaheNiJuan, we are advocating and persuading BPO Workers and alike that traveling doesn’t need to be expensive” he added.

I joined this lifestyle club because this group is truly inline to what I loved the most – to travel.  The first travel destination was Bolinao, Pangasinan.

When you’re planning to travel in the north, specifically in Bolinao, Pangasinan; never forget to bring your friends or family to this worth visiting restaurant which is situated along the river – Sungayan Grill and Floating Restaurant.

Location

This place is truly placid eloquently that it is situated in a rural zone which is totally six-hour travel away from Manila via land (Van). Honestly if you‘re bearing in mind to try this restaurant solely, then don’t consider this, since it really takes an effort just to reach the location. However, if you’re on a backpacking trip, then think about to include this to your itinerary. In addition, it is just located in Balingasay, Bolinao , Pangasinan and a 10-minute walk from the main highway.



About the Place.

Sungayan Grill and Restaurant is a floating restaurant that reminds me of LOBOC Floating Restaurant in Bohol. This restaurant offers a boodle fight type of dine. Indeed, they also serve various packages depending on the numbers of guest – e.i. table for two, barkada, family and etcetera. You can avail the floating restaurant with an additional fee of PHP150 on the top of the food’s bill and you can now experience eating while seeing the nature. If you get dizzy easily like I do, then you can just eat there at the place.



There are nipa huts around, ornamental plants and fish pond which are very perfect-framing for photography. Moreover, if you have a car; parking area is available.

THE FOODS.



Majority of the foods they serve – sea foods and grilled foods which is least expensive when you eat sea foods in Dampa located in the city. This is due to the reason that sea foods are incredibly abundant here in Pangasinan as the supply increases, the price decreases.

Boodle dining includes rice, crabs, shrimps, grilled fish, sea weeds, green mango and various vegetables, among others. Juice is for free and unlimited as well.  If I’m gonna rate the taste, I’ll give it a ten over ten since that time I was extremely hungry due to the activities we did before we came in here. Honestly, a judgement of a person when it comes to taste is no longer reliable if hunger dominates.



THE SERVICE

Since they served freshly from the kitchen, then expect that you have to wait for a few minutes. When I say few, it takes 30 minutes which is good for me as I have enough time to saunter the place and take footages for my Vlog.  But the staffs here are costumer- oriented, since this is a restaurant of course.


OVERALL

With that picturesque view, undeniably eating the foods here is more enjoyable. That feeling wherein the nature is connecting towards you which leads me to become more relaxed and stress-free to the point that, I almost forget the span of time I was waiting for the foods I ordered.  The fresh air coming from the river is astounding .This place is somewhat convincing you to stay longer and make a fuss of the scenery.



Personally, I love the experience of eating sea foods by the river. It is totally different to what I’ve routinely did everyday – eating at fast food restaurant. Sungayan Grill and Floating Restaurant satisfies both my gastronomically craving and my crammed mind.
