🎙️ TULI KA NA BA? | The Truth About Circumcision in the Philippines ft. M.A. Buendia 🌞

circumcision in the Philippines, Filipino culture, pagtutuli, summer circumcision, traditional circumcision vs medical, Filipino rites of passage, *tuli* tradition, circumcision myths, circumcision benefits, *pukpok* circumcision, passage to manhood, Filipino summer traditions, health benefits of circumcision, circumcision stigma, funny tuli stories, circumcision procedure, Filipino health rituals, circumcision experiences, Filipino customs, *tuli* stories, circumcision discussion, M.A. Buendia podcast, Filipino circumcision podcast, cultural significance of circumcision, Filipino manhood, circumcision health facts, *tuli* podcast, circumcision talk, summer rites in the Philippines, traditional Filipino medicine

Hey there, guys! 🌞 If you're from the Philippines, you've probably noticed something very peculiar when summer hits—aside from the scorching heat and beach vacations, it's also *tuli* season! Yes, circumcision is one of those rites of passage that marks a milestone for many young Filipino boys. But why is *pagtutuli* (circumcision) such a deeply ingrained tradition, and why does it still spark a lot of curiosity and discomfort for some people? 🤔

I recently sat down with M.A. Buendia to dive deep into the world of circumcision. We’re breaking down everything you need to know—from its cultural significance to the myths, the benefits, and yes, even the stigma surrounding it. So grab a seat (or a *salungso*, if you're in a traditional Filipino home), and let's get into this juicy topic!

🎥 WATCH THE VLOG:

What’s With Summer and Circumcision? 🌴

It’s no surprise that summer is the peak season for circumcision in the Philippines. But why? Is there something about the heat that makes it the perfect time for *tuli*? 🤔 As we discussed in our podcast, the tradition has a lot to do with the Filipino belief that it’s easier to recover from the procedure during the hot, dry weather. Plus, kids are often off school and have more time to heal without missing important activities. It's definitely a *summer rite* that’s become as Filipino as *halo-halo*!

Pukpok vs. Medical: What’s the Difference? 🏥

Now, not all circumcisions are created equal. There’s the traditional “*pukpok*” method, which involves a more hands-on approach, and the more modern, medicalized version that you see in clinics and hospitals. We got into the nitty-gritty differences between the two. *Pukpok* is, well, pretty much a DIY situation—no fancy tools, just the basics. The medical method, on the other hand, is a lot more sanitized and, frankly, safer. But which one is better? You’ll be surprised at the insights we uncovered. 😉

Is Circumcision a Passage to Manhood? 🤷‍♂️

One of the things that’s often said about circumcision is that it’s a “passage to manhood.” But is that true? M.A. and I discussed whether *tuli* is more about cultural expectations or whether it really holds a deeper meaning in transitioning boys to men. You know, the idea that once you’re circumcised, you’re no longer a little boy. Or is it just another tradition passed down through generations? Spoiler alert: it’s more complicated than you think!

Funny *Tuli* Stories That Will Make You Laugh! 😂

Of course, what’s a podcast without some laughs? In between the serious talk, we shared some hilarious *tuli* stories from our childhoods. Let’s just say, there’s a lot of humor surrounding the whole process, from the awkward moments to the crazy ways some of us survived it. Trust me, you don’t want to miss the laughs and some cringe-worthy moments we brought up.

The Science Behind Circumcision—Is It Really Beneficial? 🧬

Finally, we dug into the science. Is circumcision really a health benefit, as some claim? From reducing the risk of infections to possible benefits in sexual health, we explored what the experts say. Spoiler alert: there are actual health benefits—but like with most things, there are also risks. So, if you're on the fence about the procedure, this part of the discussion is for you.

So, there you have it, folks! It’s more than just a tradition—it’s a conversation we need to have in a more open and educated way. Whether you’ve been through it, know someone who has, or are just curious, *tuli* is a part of Filipino culture that we need to talk about—without the awkwardness and stigma.

Check out our full conversation with M.A. Buendia in the embedded video below. We hope this gives you a better understanding of *pagtutuli* and the role it plays in Filipino society. Drop a comment or share your own *tuli* story—we’d love to hear from you!

Until next time! 🌞🎙️

When Gaydar Signal is Off.

"Gaydar" is a slang term that refers to the supposed ability to perceive or recognize someone's sexual orientation, particularly whether someone is gay, based on intuition, behavior, appearance, or other subtle cues. The word is a blend of "gay" and "radar."

While some people believe in the concept of gaydar, research suggests that it is often based on stereotypes and assumptions rather than an actual ability to detect someone's sexuality. It can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or reinforce harmful biases.

As the world gradually transitions back to the traditional office setup, the Philippines’ inter-agency Fiscal Incentives Review Board (FIRB) has mandated that IT-BPM firms allow only 90% of their workforce to work remotely until March 31, 2022. After that, call center employees, IT professionals, and animators are expected to return to the office or risk forfeiting tax-exempt incentives for their companies. While this resolution is aimed at economic recovery, I personally find the permanent WFH setup more beneficial, not only for individual workers but also for organizations as a whole.

🎥 WATCH THE VLOG:
One of the main reasons I favor WFH is the unparalleled work-life balance it offers. Working from the comfort of my home has allowed me to spend more quality time with my family, avoid the daily commute, and focus on my physical and mental well-being. The time saved from not being stuck in traffic is instead spent on hobbies, exercise, or simply relaxing. WFH also eliminates many of the distractions and stressors of the traditional office environment, boosting my productivity and job satisfaction. For industries like IT and BPO, where output often matters more than location, this setup is ideal.

However, the mandated return-to-office setup overlooks the positive impact WFH has had on employees. Many of us have adapted to this new normal and proven that remote work can be as effective, if not more so, than working in an office. While I understand the government’s goal of revitalizing the economy, I believe that hybrid or flexible work models should be considered as a compromise. WFH has been a game-changer for many professionals, including myself, and moving forward, it’s crucial to strike a balance that benefits both workers and the industry. What’s your take on this?
Are you team WFH or RTO? Let’s discuss! 🏡💻
