🌿 Embracing the Plant Enthusiast Lifestyle in a 13sqm Studio in Mandaluyong

Living in the heart of the city can feel like a concrete jungle—but it doesn’t have to be. As someone living solo in a cozy 13sqm studio-type apartment in Mandaluyong, I’ve discovered the joy and calming power of filling my small space with greenery. Despite the tight quarters, my home has become a peaceful urban jungle, and a big part of that transformation started with a rainy-day decision that turned into a lifestyle.

During a recent typhoon in the Philippines, while rain poured nonstop outside, I found myself needing a dose of nature’s comfort. So, I stepped out briefly to gather some variegated pothos plants I had growing outside. I cut a few healthy vines and placed them in makeshift vases—just simple cups filled with water. One went on my work-from-home desk to keep me company through long hours of meetings and tasks. Another cup found a home on top of my fridge, next to a warm Himalayan salt lamp. I even placed some by the sink, resting gracefully on top of my water filter. And yes, two more now live in the bathroom, thriving under the occasional mist from the shower.

This lifestyle isn’t just about decorating—it’s about grounding. Plants have brought a fresh, peaceful vibe to my apartment, making even the smallest corners come alive. They’re not just decor; they’re daily reminders of life, care, and resilience. Especially when you live alone, as I do, these green companions offer silent support and create a space that feels truly nurturing. Whether you’re in a big house or a small studio, the plant enthusiast lifestyle can transform your space into a soothing sanctuary—even during a storm.

Watch how I spent a cozy rainy day collecting pothos vines, styling them in simple cups, and turning my studio into a leafy retreat amid the typhoon season.

🌿😭 GOODBYE PLANTITO LIFESTYLE! | Saying Farewell to My Indoor Jungle 🌱💔

Plantito Lifestyle, goodbye plantito, saying goodbye to plants, indoor plants, small space gardening, condo living,micro-living,ornamental plants, urban gardening, houseplants, tiny condo gardening, plant care, halaMANONG,plant lover, plantito problems, indoor jungle, small space living, plant collection, minimalist lifestyle, downsizing plants,13SQM condo, plant journey, plant enthusiast, houseplant care Today’s blog hits differently. It’s emotional, reflective, and bittersweet—as I officially bid goodbye to my beloved Plantito lifestyle, at least for now. For the past few years, especially during lockdown, tending to my indoor jungle brought me peace, purpose, and joy. But now, the time has come to part ways with that chapter of my life.

  🎥 WATCH THE VLOG:

🌱 It All Started With Lockdown…

Back when the world paused and we were all forced to stay home, I found comfort in green. Like many of you, I turned to plants—watching them grow became a symbol of hope during uncertain times. I transformed my 13sqm condo unit into a mini jungle, collecting ornamental greens left and right. From snake plants to pothos, every leaf had a place.

But of course, plantdemic happened. Indoor plants became a trend and, along with the hype, came sky-high prices. I spent a lot—too much, honestly—on pots, ceramic vases, rare cuttings, and trendy foliage. And I’m not going to lie, it was addictive.

🐶 Then Came Escobar...

Life changed again when I welcomed Escobar, my sweet American Bully and emotional support dog. As I shifted focus to pet parenting, the plants slowly became an afterthought. Taking care of both a jungle and a gentle giant in such a small space? Not easy.

🪴 The Harsh Truth About Condo Planting

Let’s be real—plants need air, sunlight, and breathing space. My tiny unit wasn’t ideal. The struggle to keep my green babies alive became exhausting. Some plants dried out, some got infested, and others just didn’t survive. It hurt seeing them wither, knowing I couldn’t give them the environment they deserved.

💔 The Letting Go

So in this vlog, I show you how I finally let go.

Yes, I’m de-planting my life.

I’ve started disposing of my ceramic vases and decorative pots—some of which I’m selling to recover even a small return on investment. Others I’ll give away. It’s not about the money, though. It’s about closure and making peace with the decision.

Because despite everything, I don’t regret a thing.

Those plantito days gave me peace during the darkest moments of the pandemic. They taught me patience, nurturance, and the beauty of slow living. And for that, I’m grateful.

🛑 This Is Not the End

I may be saying goodbye for now, but not forever. Who knows? One day, I might start again with low-maintenance or small-space-friendly greens. Maybe even herbs I can use for cooking! 🌿

If you're a fellow #Plantito or #Plantita, have you ever felt the need to pause or reset? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Let’s talk in the comments.

🌱 Beginner-Friendly Bonsai: How to Care for Cuphea Hyssopifolia (Mexican Heather) Indoors

Cuphea Hyssopifolia,Mexican Heather bonsai, indoor bonsai care, bonsai from Bicol, indoor plant care, plantito lifestyle, plantita lifestyle, how to care for Mexican Heather,Cuphea Hyssopifolia care, indoor bonsai tips,Cuphea Hyssopifolia bonsai, quarantine plant collection, low maintenance indoor plants, best bonsai for beginners, micro living plants, houseplant tips, bonsai for small spaces, purple flowering bonsai, elfin herb plant,Hawaiian heather care Welcome back, plant lovers! In today’s episode of my #Plantito journey, I’m excited to introduce you to my newest indoor bonsai baby—the Cuphea Hyssopifolia, more commonly known as Mexican Heather. This beauty came all the way from Bicol, and it’s already making my tiny home garden feel extra magical. ✨

If you're a beginner, or even a seasoned #Plantita/#Plantito, this plant is the perfect bonsai starter. With its dainty purple (sometimes lavender or white) flowers and compact evergreen foliage, it fits beautifully into micro-living spaces, condo balconies, or sunny windowsills.

  🎥 WATCH THE VLOG:

🌞 Sunlight

Needs Cuphea Hyssopifolia thrives in bright, indirect light but can also handle a few hours of direct morning sun. Avoid placing it under intense afternoon rays as it may scorch the delicate leaves.

💧 Watering Tips

This plant loves consistent moisture, but don’t overdo it! Water only when the top inch of the soil feels dry. Pro tip: use a spray bottle for light misting if your space is dry or air-conditioned.

🌿 Soil & Potting Mix

Use well-draining soil—a mix of loam, sand, and compost works great. A bonsai pot with drainage holes is ideal to prevent root rot. Re-potting every 1–2 years will help refresh the soil and promote healthy growth.

✂️ Maintenance

Prune lightly to maintain its shape and encourage more blooms. Remove any dry or yellowing leaves, and always sterilize your tools before trimming.

✨ BONUS: My Personal Tips from Experience

  • Place a tray of water nearby to maintain humidity, especially in air-conditioned rooms.
  • Talk to your plant! (I swear, mine responds better after a little morning pep talk. 😂)
  • Rotate the pot every few days so the plant grows evenly toward the light.
Cuphea Hyssopifolia, also known as false heather, elfin herb, or Hawaiian heather, is not just beautiful—it's also easy to care for, making it a wonderful companion for your indoor jungle or even as a gift idea for fellow plant parents.

In this episode of my #PlanTitoVlog, I took a quick trip to Japan Home Center—one of my favorite go-to stores for affordable home essentials—and I was thrilled to discover a new batch of budget-friendly display pots and vases that are both functional and stylish!

  🎥 WATCH THE VLOG:

🌿 Why Japan Home Center?

Japan Home Center has long been known for its practical, minimalist, and surprisingly chic home finds. From cleaning tools to storage hacks, the store is a goldmine for anyone living in micro spaces like condos, tiny apartments, or urban homes here in the Philippines. But what caught my eye on this trip was their growing selection of decorative pots and vases that are perfect for indoor plant lovers and DIY home decorators.

🛍️ My Top Budget-Friendly Finds

Here’s a peek at my top picks from this haul:

1. Ceramic Mini Vases (₱88–₱188)
Perfect for coffee tables, shelves, or window sills—these muted-tone ceramic vases add a soft touch to any corner of your home. I paired mine with dried eucalyptus stems for a clean, Scandinavian vibe.

2. Textured Clay Pots (₱108–₱198)
Great for succulents or snake plants, these clay pots come in matte finishes and geometric textures that look far more expensive than they are. Perfect for minimalist and boho-themed homes.

3. Plastic Pots with Built-in Saucers (₱48–₱98)
Don’t underestimate plastic! These lightweight options are ideal for hanging plants or balcony gardening. They’re also easier to clean and maintain—especially for beginners.

4. Decorative Glass Vases (₱128–₱228)
I couldn’t leave without picking up a few clear glass vases, which I use for propagation. They're great for showcasing plant roots or using as centerpieces for cut flowers.

💡 Decorating Tips for Small Spaces

Living in a small space doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style.

Here are a few PlanTito-approved tips:
  • Mix heights and textures: Combine ceramic, glass, and clay to add dimension.
  • Use vertical space: Hanging pots or wall-mounted shelves can help maximize limited floor area.
  • Keep it coordinated: Pick a neutral or earthy color palette for a cohesive look.
  • Add personality: Customize with pebbles, wood trays, or macrame pot holders

📍Where to Shop

Most Japan Home Center branches carry these display pots and vases, but inventory varies—so make sure to check out different branches or visit their pop-up stalls in major malls. Prices range from ₱48 to ₱228, making it one of the most affordable places for home décor and indoor gardening needs.

  🎥 WATCH THE VLOG:

The Ever-Reliable ZZ Plant

The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is a superstar in the world of indoor gardening. Known for its glossy, waxy leaves and near-indestructible nature, this plant is perfect for first-time plant parents or anyone living in a small condo. It thrives on neglect and can survive in low light and even drought-like conditions. This makes it a no-brainer for busy people or those who aren’t exactly green thumbs. With minimal watering (about once every two weeks), the ZZ Plant adds a modern, vibrant look to any corner of your space while purifying the air.

The Beauty of Peace Lily

The Peace Lily is not just a plant—it’s a statement piece. Its dark green foliage and elegant white flowers bring a touch of sophistication to any room. What I love about the Peace Lily is its ability to thrive in indirect light, making it ideal for smaller spaces with limited natural sunlight. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, it’s a natural air purifier, removing toxins like ammonia and benzene from the air. However, it does require regular watering to keep those lush leaves hydrated. Pro tip: When the leaves droop slightly, it’s the plant’s way of telling you it’s thirsty!

🌟 The Stylish Snake Plant

The Snake Plant, also known as Sansevieria or Mother-in-Law's Tongue, is another favorite addition to my growing indoor jungle. This plant is not only strikingly beautiful with its upright, sword-like leaves, but it’s also one of the easiest plants to care for. Snake Plants thrive in low light conditions and require minimal watering, making them perfect for busy individuals or plant beginners. What’s more, they are excellent air purifiers, known to filter toxins and improve air quality. I love how they add a modern, sleek vibe to my condo’s interior, while also helping me breathe cleaner air. It’s the ultimate low-maintenance plant with maximum impact!

Embracing the Plantito Lifestyle

Urban gardening has become my new way of connecting with nature, even in a bustling city. With every plant I bring home, I learn something new—whether it’s understanding light requirements, experimenting with soil mixes, or simply finding joy in watching them grow. In this episode, we’re tackling two intriguing topics: a unique gardening hack using MSG (or vetsin) to help your indoor plants thrive, and a mouthwatering ready-to-cook pork dish perfect for air frying.

MSG for Indoor Plants: Does It Work?

You may know MSG as a popular seasoning for enhancing the flavor of your favorite dishes, but did you know it can also work wonders for your plants? MSG contains sodium and glutamate, which can promote healthy plant growth when used correctly. Here's how it works:
  • Nutrient Boost: The sodium in MSG can enhance water retention in the soil, while the glutamate can act as a nitrogen source, which is essential for plant growth.
  • Improved Absorption: When diluted properly, MSG helps plants absorb nutrients more efficiently.

Tips for Using MSG on Indoor Plants:

  1. Dilution is Key: Mix a pinch of MSG in 1 liter of water to avoid overfeeding your plants.
  2. Use Sparingly: Apply the mixture once every 2-3 weeks to prevent salt buildup in the soil.
  3. Test First: Always try the solution on a small area or one plant before applying it to your entire collection.
Curious to see if this method works? Watch the vlog to find out my results and tips for making the most of this unconventional gardening hack!

A Ready-to-Cook Pork Dish for Air Frying

Shifting gears to the kitchen, I’m thrilled to share my latest culinary find—a ready-to-cook pork dish that’s ideal for air frying! I ordered this from my officemate, who turned to small business ventures during the pandemic. Supporting small businesses has never tasted so good!

This pork dish is pre-marinated and perfectly seasoned, making it a quick and hassle-free option for busy days. The air fryer gives it a crispy exterior while keeping the inside juicy and flavorful. Pair it with steamed rice or fresh salad for a satisfying meal.

Why Air Fryers Are Perfect for Ready-to-Cook Meals:

  • Healthier Cooking: Get that crispy texture without deep frying in oil.
  • Time-Saving: No need for extensive prep; just pop it in the air fryer and let it cook!
  • Mess-Free: Less cleanup compared to traditional frying methods.
Get all the details on how I prepared this dish in the vlog and discover why it’s a must-try for anyone with a busy lifestyle or a love for easy, delicious meals.

Losing a plant is never easy, especially when you’ve poured so much care and love into it. My bonsai was more than just a decorative indoor plant; it was a symbol of patience and growth, something that brought me joy during the quiet moments of quarantine. Unfortunately, my eagerness to nurture it led to its untimely demise. I overwatered it, believing it needed constant hydration, and added too much fertilizer, thinking it would make it thrive. Instead, I unknowingly overwhelmed its delicate system, and now I’m left reflecting on the hard lessons it taught me.

  🎥 WATCH THE VLOG:
As a Plantito, the quarantine gave me ample time to immerse myself in indoor gardening. My small living space transformed into a haven for greenery, with the bonsai as its crowning jewel. However, I’ve learned that plant parenting requires more than just enthusiasm—it demands balance and restraint. Plants like bonsai thrive on just the right amount of care. Overwatering can suffocate their roots, and excessive fertilizer can burn them. I now understand that less is often more when it comes to nurturing these beautiful, living artworks.

In loving memory of my bonsai, I want to share this experience with fellow plant lovers. Mistakes are part of the journey, and every plant lost is an opportunity to learn and grow as a gardener. To my bonsai, thank you for the lessons of patience, balance, and resilience. To all Plantitos and Plantitas out there, let’s remember that sometimes, giving space and allowing our plants to adapt naturally is the best way to help them thrive. 🌱

The lockdown brought out a plant enthusiast in me. Like many others, I turned to gardening as a way to bring life into my small space and find solace amidst uncertainty. One of my most exciting experiences as a budding "Plant Tito" was unboxing two rare snake plants: the elegant Sansevieria Coppertone and the striking Sansevieria Whale Fin. However, this unboxing came with its own lessons about transparency and responsibility in online transactions.

  🎥 WATCH THE VLOG:
When I ordered these plants from two separate sellers on Shopee, I paid via credit card and anticipated a smooth delivery process. What caught me off guard was the additional ₱200 delivery fee charged by LBC when the package arrived. The seller never mentioned this detail in our chat, and I had assumed the shipping cost was already included in the price I paid online. It was disappointing, and for a moment, I felt blindsided. However, I accepted the delivery. Returning the plants to the seller wasn’t an option since I didn’t want these delicate leaves to suffer in transit. The experience left me reflecting on the importance of clear communication and thorough reading of terms when buying plants online.

Sansevieria Coppertone, also known as the "Copper Snake Plant,"

Lessons Learned from My Plant Journey 🌟

This incident taught me two critical lessons: always ask questions and never assume. It is the seller's responsibility to highlight all additional charges upfront, but as buyers, we also need to be proactive in clarifying terms. Transparency is key to fostering trust in online transactions, especially when purchasing something as precious and perishable as plants. I now take extra steps to double-check shipping arrangements and make sure both parties are aligned before completing an order. This way, I can focus on the joy of unboxing rather than dealing with unexpected surprises.

Sansevieria Coppertone, also known as the "Copper Snake Plant,"

Snake Plant Coppertone (Kirkii) 🌱

The Sansevieria Coppertone, also known as the "Copper Snake Plant," is a true beauty with its unique bronze-green leaves and intricate patterns. When I unboxed this plant, I was captivated by how the light seemed to reflect off its foliage, almost as if it were glowing. Known for its air-purifying qualities and low-maintenance care, the Coppertone is an excellent addition to any plant lover’s collection. It thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate low-light conditions, making it perfect for my small condo space. This plant is more than just decoration—it’s a reminder that nature’s elegance can be found even in simplicity.

Sansevieria Masoniana, commonly called the "Whale Fin,"

Snake Plant Whale Fin 🌵

The Sansevieria Masoniana, commonly called the "Whale Fin," is truly a showstopper. Its broad, paddle-like leaf demands attention and exudes a sense of strength and resilience. When I first held it, I marveled at its bold and striking appearance, unlike any other plant I own. Despite its dramatic look, the Whale Fin is surprisingly easy to care for. It requires minimal watering and can survive neglect—a perfect plant for busy plant parents like me. Its adaptability and uniqueness make it a great centerpiece for my indoor garden and a symbol of thriving in any condition.

Takeaway 🌟

Unboxing these rare plants was not just an exciting hobby but a life lesson in patience and accountability. Every plant purchase is an opportunity to learn—not just about care routines but about communication, clarity, and understanding. While the surprise shipping fee was an unexpected bump in the road, it reminded me to always seek clarity before committing to any purchase. These rare snake plants now sit proudly in my collection, not only beautifying my home but also serving as a daily reminder of growth, resilience, and the importance of being informed. 🌱

During the lockdown, like many others, I found myself searching for new hobbies to help manage the stress and uncertainty of the times. That’s when I discovered the calming world of indoor plants. Becoming an indoor plant enthusiast gave me a sense of purpose and a way to connect with nature, even while confined within the four walls of my home. The soothing green leaves and the satisfaction of nurturing something alive became a therapeutic escape from the anxieties brought on by the pandemic. Over time, my collection grew, and I became particularly fascinated with Sansevieria, commonly known as snake plants, due to their striking appearance and low-maintenance nature.

Recently, I decided to expand my collection with two rare varieties: Sansevieria Dawei and Sansevieria Fernwood. I purchased them online through Shopee Philippines, eager to add these unique species to my urban jungle. The excitement of unboxing these plants was like opening a gift to myself—a reminder of the resilience and growth we all aspire to during challenging times. In my latest vlog, I share this unboxing experience, showcasing the beauty and distinctive characteristics of these snake plants. For me, the journey led to an unexpected yet profoundly rewarding path: becoming a Certified Plantito.

The Beginnings of a Green Journey.

Living in a small condo unit in the bustling heart of the Philippines, space is a luxury. But even with limited room, the desire to connect with nature persisted. The stress and anxiety brought about by the lockdown needed an outlet, and indoor plants became my sanctuary. It started with a single Snake Plant, known for its low maintenance and air-purifying qualities. Little did I know, this was just the beginning.

The Plant Collection Grows
As days turned into weeks, my collection expanded. Pothos, ZZ Plants, Spider Plants, and a variety of succulents soon adorned every available nook and cranny of my condo. Each plant brought its unique charm and benefits. The Pothos, with its trailing vines, added a touch of wild beauty, while the ZZ Plant's resilience mirrored the strength I aspired to have.

Therapeutic Benefits of Indoor Plants
The benefits of indoor gardening went beyond aesthetics. Studies have shown that indoor plants can significantly reduce stress and improve mental health. For me, tending to my plants became a form of therapy. The simple act of watering, pruning, and watching them grow provided a sense of purpose and tranquility during uncertain times.

Tips for Microliving Plantitos and Plantitas
Living in a small space shouldn't deter you from embracing the green life. Here are a few tips I've gathered along my journey:

  • Choose Low-Maintenance Plants: Start with hardy plants like the Snake Plant, ZZ Plant, and succulents which require minimal care.
  • Maximize Vertical Space: Use shelves and hanging planters to make the most of your limited space.
  • Ensure Proper Lighting: Most indoor plants thrive in indirect light. Find the spots in your home that receive the most natural light and place your plants accordingly.
  • Regular Care Routine: Establish a routine for watering and pruning. Over time, you'll learn the specific needs of each plant.

Join the Plantito Movement
Becoming a Plantito has been more than just a hobby; it has been a lifeline during these challenging times. The joy of nurturing life, even in the smallest form, has brought immense satisfaction and peace. If you're looking for a way to cope with stress or simply want to add a touch of nature to your home, I highly recommend starting your own indoor plant collection.

So, here's to the Plantitos and Plantitas out there—let's continue to grow and thrive, one leaf at a time. 🌱
